How to install Dokuwiki

Installing Dokuwiki is very easy as Dokuwiki doesn't require a database. Instead, Dokuwiki uses files on the filesystem to store the wiki data. This makes it very easy to move and even backup. Follow these steps to install Dokuwiki.

Installation Steps

First, go to https://www.dokuwiki.com and then click on the Download button.

On the Download page, you can click the download button to download the latest stable version or you can customize your download. For example, you may not need all the languages. You can select only the languages you will need. You can also choose to add some extra plugins that will come bundled. You may want to include the Upgrade plugin to make future upgrades easier. If you don't select any of these plugins, you can add them later on.

Next, your browser will download the files to your local computer. The file format will be .tgz - Don't worry about trying to open it. We're going to upload it to our web hosting account and extract it there.

Login to your web hosting account. In this example, we're using cPanel. Go to the location that you want to run Dokuwiki and upload the files. This can be a subdomain or subfolder or even your main public_html if you want to run Dokuwiki on your main domain. In this example, we're uploading the files to a wiki subdomain.

Once uploaded, you will then need to extract the files. This can be done by selecting the .tgz file and clicking "Extract" or right clicking on the file and then selecting "Extract.

The files will be extracted to a dokuwiki directory. If you don't want this (your URL would be: https://<yourdomain>/dokuwiki), then you will need to select all the files and then move them to the main directory.

Now you can go to where you installed Dokuwiki, like https://wiki.example.com/install.php and you should see a page like this:

You can now give your wiki a name, create an admin user, set an ACL, and then set a license (if you want) for your docs.

If you want a completely private wiki, you may want to select the "Closed Wiki" option and keep user registration disabled. This will force a login in order to see any content, including media. An Open Wiki will allow everyone to read, write, and upload files even if they are not registered. You should not select this option unless you have some other way to secure your site against spammers. A Public Wiki will allow everyone to read pages, but writing and uploading will be restricted to people with accounts.

Once installed, you will see the following confirmation.

At this point, you should delete the install.php file otherwise anyone can then change settings on your wiki.

Now your wiki is installed and ready to go.
